The acceleration of malaria elimination in Papua requires strong and unified leadership commitment at the provincial level. Following the strategic agreements made during the high-level forum in Bali, the Indonesian Government is now initiating the establishment of the Papua Governors' Communication Forum. This forum is designed as a formal coordination platform for regional leaders to share best practices, align regulatory policies, and consolidate regional budgetary support to ensure that malaria elimination targets are achieved collectively across the Papua region.

The formation of this forum is a crucial step in strengthening synchronisation between the central and regional governments. Through an intensive communication platform, it is expected that cross-border administrative barriers in malaria control can be addressed through more solid collaboration, ensuring that health interventions are more effective and sustainable.

To formulate this framework, the Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health convened a coordination meeting on Thursday, 11 September 2025. This virtual gathering involved cross-sectoral ministries such as the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the State Secretariat, along with technical experts. During the meeting, Iqbal Elyazar, Ph.D. attended as a malaria expert to provide technical input regarding the forum's concept and operational mechanisms to ensure alignment with epidemiological needs on the ground.

Through these discussions, it is expected that the initial draft agreement on the forum's structure and functions can be promptly finalised. The synergy between government policy and expert support remains a primary asset in mobilising all efforts within Papua to realise the vision of a Malaria-Free Indonesia by 2030.
